Project Description

World Refugee Day is held annually on June 20th in Pittsburgh and features live performances, speakers, food vendors, craft vendors, children’s activities and more. The event also features a citizenship ceremony for ten immigrants.

Molly Rice, the co-founder of Real/Time Interventions, the Northern Area Multi-Service Center and the Office of Public Art worked closely with a group of Afghan women as they learned to sew and perfected their favorite dishes from home. Part of Molly’s residency was to help the women share their culture with Pittsburghers to bring the two cultures together. The Afghan women’s vendor table at World Refugee Day was captured, as well as the Naturalization Ceremony, interviews with members of the Afghan community and each group involved in this project. The message inspires viewers to better understand and welcome refugees into their area and allows both communities to come together under common themes, such as food, art and clothing!
